It’s 4:15pm on the side of route 70 in West Virgina and my odometer reads 146 miles on this tank just before the R90 dies. It didn’t sputter or slowly lose power, it just died. Once we finish coasting to the shoulder of the highway I begin to worry about the dreaded electronic ignition issues I had been having a week ago. In our trail runs, I was able to get about 180-190 miles to the tank (about 5 gallons) so having the bike shut off at 146 miles didn’t read as a lack of gas type of issue. Enter the spark plug remover tool and begin our diagnosis. It proves fruitful as I still have spark on this beast.
So if it’s not a lack of spark then process of elimination points to either a lack of air or gas. I can almost guarantee its not the air filters being clogged and therefore has to be gas. Disregarding the odometer reading, I flipped the petcock to reserve and naturally she came alive. We take the next exit for some fuel and push on through. Now I’ll have to monitor the fuel consumption to figure out why my MPG can down so low.
Safe travels
